译海撷英(二)

海伦1981年8月抵达上海,1940年12月回国。旅华10年期间,海伦目睹了水旱灾荒、腐败政府和战争带给中国人民的苦痛;报道、支持并参与了中国人民反对法西断侵略的正义斗争。

作为诗人和作家的海伦·斯诺

海伦抵达中国一个月后,就发生了震惊中外的“九·一八”事变。面对日本军国主义的侵略,国民政府采取不抵抗政策。国际舆论普遍认为“中国完了!”

海伦和埃德加·斯诺一起,精选、翻译了以鲁迅为代表的中国左翼作家的短篇小说,并以《活的中国》为书名出版,告诉世人,“中国没有死!读着这些小说,你就会感到中国的脉搏依然在跳动!”

在日本大举侵犯华北的时候,海伦以满腔的热忱和焦急的心情,创作了她有名的长诗《古老的北平》,由冰心翻译发表,号召中国军民起来,保卫华北,保卫古老的北平!

海伦克服重重困难,于1937年1月在北平创办了以反对法西斯为宗旨的《民主》杂志,被称为“黑暗的地平线上倏忽一闪的雷电,”“它是中国出版的最重要的英文期刊之一,获得巨大的、立竿见影的成功,或占了中国的知说浆”,号召人们反对日本侵略。

她冒着生命危险,在枪林弹雨现场采访了十九路军1932年的“一·二八”抗战,向外报道:“中国人反击了!”

1985年的“一二.九”爱国学生运动震惊中外,海伦连续追踪报道这次爱国运动达6个月之久,在数以百计的中外记者中首屈一指。

1936年10月3日,海伦赴西安采访张学良将至,在伦敦《先驱日报》发表独家报道“宁可要红军,不要日本人,中国将军要团结”,透露了国共两党第二次合作的信息,提前70天预测到“西安事变”的发生。

“西安事变”发生后,海伦进行了一系列“正本清源”的新闻报道工作,有助于事变的和平解决和抗日民族统一战线的形成。

1937年5月3日至9月12日,海伦在长达四个月的延安之行期间,多次采访毛泽东、朱德、周恩来等34位红军领油,深入了解中共抗战的方针和策略,不仅为她写作《续西行漫记》获得了丰富的第一手资料,而且多次写信给北平的丈夫埃德加,建议他修改和删除《西行漫记》草稿中不利于蒋介石的部分章节和细节,以便有利于抗日民族统一战线。该书当年岁末出版后,对促成和加强抗日民族统一战线,起到了积极的作用。

在中国人民抗日斗争中,海伦不仅是一个见证者,而且是一个积极的参与者。

她和埃德加不仅把他们在北平盔甲厂13号的住宅,用作学生领袖们秘密集会的地方,还为“一二·九”游行“出谋划策”,帮助学生翻译、油印他们在游行中散发的宣言和标语口号。海伦跑在游行队伍的最前面,用照相机拍照的办法,保护学生不受军警的阻拦和殴打。她多次掩护被军警追捕的学生领袖,在他们的家里藏身。

面对被日军炸毁的中国工业和抗日军民生活物资的匮乏,她首先提出“组织工业合作社”的主张,并为“工合”在国内、外筹集资金,推动了“工合”运动在全国轰轰烈烈开展起来,及时、有力地支持了中国军民的抗日斗争。

Helen arrived in Shanghai on August, 1931, shereturned to the states on December,1940. During her ten-year trip in China,Helen had witnessed the floods and drought natural disaster, corruptiongovernment and war, which led to the suffering of Chinese people; she alsoreported news, supported and joined the Chinese Anti-fascist aggression war.

Itwas a month later since Helen came to China, that the September 18thIncident broke, which shocked the home and abroad, Facing with the Japanesemilitarism, the National Government took measure of nonresistance policy. Theinternational opinion generally thought“This was the end of China.”

Together with her husband Edger Snow, she has selected and translatedsome short novels, of the leftist writers represented by Lu Xun, and publisheda book calledLiving China, in order to tell humankind“China still exists!”Youcan absolutely feel the energy of China by reading these novels.

Which Japanese had an enormous infringement of North China, with greatpassion and anxiety, Helen composed a famous long poem theOld Peking,thatwas translated and published by Bing Xin, she called for Chinese army andpeople to protect North China and the Old Peking!

Helen overcame lots of difficulties, eventually she established amagazineDemocracyon January 1937 in Beiping, in order to flightagainst Anti-fascist, many people gave highly commands, like“a sudden thunderflash over the dark horizon”“It is one of the most vital English magazines inChinese publishing, which receive huge and immediate success, laid its statusin Chinese intellectual ferment”,encouraged people to object the Japanese aggression.

She took risk of her life regardless of heavy gunfire, but to interviewthe 19thRoute Army in December 8thWar, reportedoutside“Chinese began to fight!”

In1935, it shocked the home and abroad about the December 9thMovementStudents, Helen continually followed up and in time to report this patrioticmovement for over six months, Helen is second to name among thousands ofChinese and foreign journalists.

OnNovember 3th, 1936,Helen went to Xi’an and interviewed General Zhang xueliang,according to her experience, Helen published individual report onHeraldJournalsaid “we would choose the Red Army rather than the Japanese, allChinese general must unite with hearts and minds,”and revealed the informationabout the second cooperation between the KMT and CPC, successfully predictingthe Xi’an Incident seventy days in advance.

After the Xi’an Incident, Helen went on a series of press reports thatcover“clear up the sources and make everything on order,”which did help thepeaceful settlement of the incident and an embryo of Anti-Japanese nationalunited front.

Helen had travelled Yan’an for four months during May 3th to September12thin 1937, she drew upon her interviews to many Red Army Commanderslike Mao Zedong, ZhuDe, and knew more about tactics and strategy of CommunistParty of China War from this journey, she came back with not only thefirst-hand material for her literatureInside Red China,but also wroteto her husband Edger in Beiping and advised him to change and delete somesections or details which were unfavorable for Chiang Kai-Shek inRed StarOver,China drafts, for the Anti-Japanese national unified front. It playedan active role in promoting and strengthening the Anti-Japanese nationalunified front when this book published at the end of year.

Helen was notmerely a witness but also an active participant in Chinese people againstJapanese aggression.

She and Edger used their house where situated in Beiping Armor Factoryof No13, an underground , to gather students leaders secretly, but also"offer suggestion derogatory"to the December 9th Movement, she helpedstudents to translate and mimeograph slogans and statements.

Helen always ran in the very front of the parade to protect studentsfrom military police's stop and assault by using the way of takingq photos. Shegave the covering to students leaders who were chased by military army, letthem hid in her house.

In response to the China's Industry bloom up by Japanese soldiers and thescarcity of life material. She came up with opinion of "organzing ChineseIndustrial Cooperation GungHo"firstly and tried her best to raise moneyfor workers' cooperative at home and abroad, and successfully pushed theChinese Army's Anti-Japanese struggle timely and effectively.
